Blanden's Big Day

Well, we did it! We made it through Blanden's first day at school. And not only did he make it, he made it well! It was a big day for all of us. First, getting dressed. You can't see it in the photo, but Blanden wore his giraffe shirt for good luck. I held up two shirts last night, one with a dog on it (which he also likes) and this one, and he clearly chose this one. Next, a hearty breakfast: a spread that included scrambled eggs, toast, yogurt, and half a banana -- and also Teddy Grahams, which are not usually part of the offerings, but Blanden saw them on the shelf and wanted a few. Mostly Ed and I just wanted him to eat enough of anything to feel full, as we didn't think he would eat much lunch. Then Ed dropped him off...
After clinging to Dad for just a few moments when they walked into the room, Blanden went off to play with the other children -- and didn't even cry when Dad left! Not even when Dad waved good-bye! Mommy got to pick him up at the end of the day, and he received a glowing report from his teachers. They said most kids who have never been to daycare before struggle much more than he did. He didn't eat lunch (thank goodness for the Teddy Grahams) and only napped about a half hour, but stayed quietly on his bed while the other children slept. He did eat the snack (vanilla wafers today), so they gave him some extra to help make up for lunch. He only began to get sad and clingy around 3:45, when the teachers said he seemed to wonder what was going on and where he was. Fortunately, he didn't have to wait too much longer as I picked him up on the dot at 4:30. When I walked in, all the kids were gathered around for story time. Blanden was sitting quietly a little off to the side, but in the lap of one of his teachers. He was excited to see me, but not running toward the door, so I take that as a good sign. And I swear he looked older! Also, we still made it to music class tonight, and Blanden was in one of his best moods ever. We thought for sure he would have crashed by then, but nope, he was a happy camper -- or rather, a happy little schoolboy. Whew!

Finally, this arrived today! My Auntie Carolyn made Blanden his very own stocking to match mine and Ed's! We are so touched. It's beautiful and we absolutely love it. I like to think that Blanden will still be using his thirty-plus years down the road, just as I treasure mine. Thank you!
