Summer Vacation!

Yesterday was Blanden's last day of school (for a few months). Ed and I both dropped him off in the morning. Blanden presented his teachers with little boxes of candy and his classmates with mini cupcakes for a party later on in the afternoon. When I picked him up at the end of the day, there were many hugs all around -- and not just among the adults, but hugs for Blanden from some of his friends too. When Blanden returns in the fall, he'll be in a two-year-old classroom. We didn't take any pictures of his class, but here are a few from his own little celebration when he got home.

Ed had stopped by Costco on his way home from work and had left a box of ice cream cookie sandwiches sitting on the counter. Blanden has not had one of these before, but he knew immediately that it was a cookie and asked for one.
And how could we say no? He ate the whole thing! I don't think he's ever had two giant chocolate cookies before, let alone with ice cream on top!

Ed is officially on summer vacation as well (i.e., FMLA leave); not returning to work until after the Fourth of July. I am planning on working up until Ellis decides to make his appearance, but nevertheless, last night called for a celebration, so we all headed out for Italian and ate on the patio, enjoying this warm, sunny, beginning-of-summer weather.

Papa Would Be Proud

Blanden and I went swimming with our friends Susan and Sarah at their neighborhood pool again today. What fun! Especially in another 90-plus-degree day. When we got home, I was craving an ice cream cone, which seemed the perfect snack to complete our adventurous afternoon. So I sawed off the top of a sugar cone to make Blanden his own mini. ;) The first one was far too heavy (I must have been channeling Papa, telling me to pile it on) and promptly fell to the floor, so Ella enjoyed an ice cream cone too. But the second one was just right -- and a big hit!

Except that we should have had the ice cream before we went to the pool, as Blanden managed to get cream, cookie chunks, and melted chocolate chips down inside his shirt. (And then Daddy arrived home early from work and caught us in the act! Ah, well. Every now and then, we have to take a break from our usual healthy fare.)

Fourth of July: Morning Pics

We began today's holiday with Belgian waffles topped with Dad's homemade vanilla-bean ice cream and fresh strawberries and blueberries -- yum!

Now we are off to either the Cherry Creek Arts Festival or to an Independence Day celebration in Wash Park, not sure yet...
Happy Fourth of July!
