Reading The Night Before Christmas with Dad
After running a few last-minute errands together, Blanden spent the day as my sous chef as we whipped up a couple of pies for tomorrow and prepped the ingredients for Ed's famous carrot soup. Fortunately, Ed was able to come home from work early, so we were able to make it to the family mass at the cathedral downtown, which was really nice. Blanden promptly charmed and chit-chatted with the people sitting next to and behind us, and was then lulled to sleep by the holiday music. We came home to a delicious dinner (a miniature bison roast and Western Slope wine for the two of us; Blanden sampled sweet potatoes earlier this afternoon for his holiday fare), Ed is now finishing his soup, then we are headed to bed, ready to celebrate Santa Claus' arrival tomorrow. According to Ed, Santa arrives at midnight, so we better get to sleep!

Actually, my comment regarding Santa's arrival timeframe is in regards to his contractual obligation not to deliver presents prior to Christmas Day. This issue has been held-up in Court for several decades. Fortunately, an appellate Court has recently ruled that Christmas Day begins at the stroke of midnight. For logistical reasons, Santa tends to deliver gifts around midnight so that he doesn't run into supply-chain management issues throughout the evening. However, like the Cable Company, Santa does state a 6-hour window (midnight to 6:00am) to account for unforseen delays and possible union-sponsored "work slow-downs" to protest the prejorative use of the term "elf". I felt an explanation was required.
Blanden, I normally write first to you, but your dad's comment just make me laugh, having to many times explain Santa's time frame to your mom and Uncle Andrew. Grandpa and I had just got home from Midnight mass, I hear you went to church tonight too...perhaps some magical Christmas we can all go to church together. Your grandpa did the music this evening, I think you might have had a hard time falling asleep to "his sound", he likes to open up the pipe organ to full blast, plus had a drummer and trumpeter. We'll be anxious to hear what Santa brings you....
